Best laptop for remote work
Transition to remote work
The Covid pandemic left a staggering impact on global business and how we operate in our day-to-day lives. For many companies, we began to realize that technology is now at a level where business communications can be conducted efficiently and securely from outside the office, meaning less time in traffic, and more time in pajamas. But as the shift to remote work takes place, we need to build an office worthy of ‘work’ as well as a home. In this article, we looked at top PC choices that offer what most job-related tasks require, and can easily get from Amazon!
What To Look For
Processor
In the simplest form, the processor is what determines the speed of the computer, given its ability to process code and information. Having a recent and powerful processor allows you to run multiple programs that require a lot of processing power such as Excel. For most tasks, we recommend looking for at minimum an i5-processor from Intel, or AMD similar model. However, if you’re planning on coding, spreadsheets, or running a plethora of webpages simultaneously, I would recommend looking into the Intel i7 processor.
Memory
Memory can be difficult depending on your work. As an overview, the minimum memory for an Ultrabook or comparable Macbook Air comes at around 128 GB. That is okay for day-to-day but business will require much more. Looking internally, we recommend at least 500 GB and considering an external 1 TB drive to house much of your work. There are also cloud-based storage plans which your company may offer as a way to easily and securely share data between colleagues with joint cloud folders that also offer advanced encryption.
Battery life
One of the beauties of remote work is in the name … REMOTE! You can work from your home, at a coffee shop, in the mountains, or on the beach. The possibilities are endless as long as you have a WIFI connection and ample battery life. From our results, the battery life of modern computers is greatly sustainable and can last around 6 hours of medium computer use (based on webpage use and input into Excel spreadsheets). For light and portable laptops, this battery life is well covered.
Ports
Lastly, as a remote work laptop, you may not always want to be staring at a smaller screen and using the laptop keyboard. Thus, we need to have ports available to plug in external monitors, keyboards, mice, and hard drives to transform your laptop into your workstation.
